History

Medix Frontiers is a dedicated organization born from a sincere zeal for service. Having experienced the African Medical Student's Training Congress (AMSTC), organized by the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) based in Accra, Ghana, Dr. Charles C. Chima, a co-founder and then a third-year medical student, was inspired and energized to follow through with his longstanding aspiration of elevating health and wellness throughout Africa. The seminal AMSTC happened between December 28, 2004, and January 3, 2005. After the congress, Dr. Chima shared his vision of a medical student-led health promotion and advocacy non-profit organization with his associates, Dr. Sebastian Ilomuanya and Dr. Nnamdi Moeteke. Together, these medical students established the organization, outlined a strategy to fulfil this vision, and attracted fellow young medical aspirants from the University of Nigeria who vouched for this vision. A distinct trait of the founding members was the consciousness that, as future doctors, they have a specialized set of skills that granted them an advantage to enhance their fellow citizens' quality of life. The shared aspirations and ideals among these medical students could be summarized as follows:

1) They considered it a privilege to be members of the medical profession.

2) They believed that this 'privilege' necessitates that they owe society the responsibility of maintaining citizens' wellbeing.

3) They held the belief that their duty to preserve life couldn't wait till becoming licensed doctors.

4) They believed that the knowledge they amassed as medical students holds the potential to revolutionize society if harnessed properly.

5) They recognized that similar aspirations existed in many of their peers, which couldn't bloom due to the lack of a suitable platform.

6) They felt a pressing need arose to found an organization that could steer these youthful energies towards improving public health through volunteer work.

7) The organization would primarily try to address local health needs, especially amongst the youth and susceptible ones, by challenging conventional methods and adopting evidence-based, youth-friendly, effective, and efficient practices.

Thus, Medix Frontiers was formed: a coalition of young people who reject the idea that the youth are the leaders of the future, proving instead that they are the leaders of today! Medix signifies they are medics while Frontiers symbolize the boundaries of existing disease control strategies. At the outset, the founders recognized the escalating crisis of the HIV/AIDS pandemic as a monumental health and socio-economic menace for future generations in sub-Saharan Africa, compelling immediate action. Therefore, among other goals and objectives, checking the spread of HIV in Nigeria became a focal point for our diversified efforts.
